The World Blind Union proudly congratulates Ms. Ana Pelaez, from Spain, on being elected as a member of the Committee on the Elimination Of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Ms. Pelaez becomes the first ever woman with a disability to serve on the Committee. She garnered 153 votes, ranking her to the second-best position among the candidates. The elections were held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, today June 7th, 2018.

"We are excited that CEDAW has finally elected a woman with visual disability to the Committee. This affirms CEDAW's commitment to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women which prohibits discrimination against women and girls with disabilities", says WBU Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Jose Viera.

"We believe that with Ms. Pelaez's presence on the CEDAW committee, gender issues affecting women with disabilities will be articulated and the indicators on sustainable development goal number 5 on gender equality will be attained. We are confident that she will strongly and effectively represent the rights and priorities of blind and partially sighted women and girls", adds Mr. Viera.

The CEDAW Committee consists of 23 experts on women’s rights from around the world. The Committee monitors implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and formulates general recommendations directed to States parties.
