World Blind Union elects new 2nd Vice President

The World Blind Union is pleased to announce the election of a new 2nd Vice President, following the sudden passing of Dr. Elly Macha in March.   Ms Donatilla Kanimba, currently the Executive Director of the Rwanda Union of the Blind (RUB), is the new 2nd Vice President effective September 2017.

Having lost her sight at the age of five, Ms Kanimba attended a boarding school for students with visual disabilities in Thika, Kenya and later attended Nairobi University where she completed a bachelor’s degree in Sociology.

She has been actively involved in the disability movement for over 30 years mostly in Kenya and Rwanda. She was also on the WBU Executive Committee as the Secretary General of African Union of the Blind (AFUB) from 2004 to 2008 and has served on various WBU committees.

As the Executive Director of the RUB, Ms Kanimba was instrumental in pushing for the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in Rwanda. Under her leadership, the Rwanda Union of the Blind also launched the Masaka Resource Centre for the Blind (MRCB), which won 2014 Human Rights prize awarded by Leitner Centre on International law and justice.

Upon her appointment, Ms Kanimba reiterated the critical role played by the WBU in urging governments to honour their commitments to the CRPD, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Marrakesh Treaty. "These instruments obligate states parties to implement plans that focus on the elimination of preventable disabilities and the provision of accessible and affordable health services and employment to people with disabilities."

"I promise to do my very best to step up WBU’s work and contribute fully to the needs of the WBU members and people with visual disabilities", she said.
