Mr. Jose Viera - CEO, The World Blind Union

Dear members and partners,

As we approach the end of this year 2018, I want to thank each one of you for being part of our WBU community. I appreciate your great work, commitment and dedication, which have been integral to WBU's progress and success.
  • Understanding the critical need to strengthen existing partnerships and establish new collaboration initiatives, we are happy to announce two new projects, funded by our international partners, to train our members in Pakistan and Rwanda in the areas of SDGs and CRPD advocacy.
  • Recognising that access to urban settings is a critical issue for our community, we are pleased to announce that a new project on accessibility in smart cities has been launched in our African region. A new full-time staff will be located in Kenya to coordinate our work on smart cities in the region.
  • Realising that our members in the Caribbean Region are facing numerous human rights challenges, we have secured funding from our international partners to support a new staff, based in the Caribbean, to focus on human rights policies.
  • Recognising that employment is at the core of WBU's priorities, we are looking into developing new projects on employment advocacy in Nigeria and Bangladesh.
  • Meanwhile, promoting braille remains a key priority of the WBU. We are pleased to announce that the World Braille Foundation has merged with WBU to continue providing Scholarship Programs for braille literacy particularly in the global south.
Finally, we are delighted to announce that as the WBU CEO, I have been designated as the Chair of the United Nations Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities. Once again, the World Blind Union has been recognised for its contribution to the disability movement. We shall continue to influence the UN to ensure that disability rights are mainstreamed across the UN systems.

We value and recognise what we have achieved so far, thanks to the strong support of our members and global partners. We have developed and made significant progress. And for that, I would like to thank you all for your significant support and dedication to the WBU work.

Best wishes for a happy holiday season with your family and friends. I look forward to working with you all in the New Year. I wish you a successful and prosperous 2019!

Mr. Jose Viera
Chief Executive Officer,
The World Blind Union
